Like so many unarmed people facing police, the victim suddenly went for his waistband, giving the officers no choice but to shoot 21 times, killing the man. The video of the shooting seems to be faulty in a peculiar way: it does not show the man going for his waistband.
The settlement with the family was $5 million, paid by the taxpayers. The officers involved are still on the job, doubtless seeking out their next victim, and LA refused to prosecute the officers (since police are allowed to shoot civilians in most jurisdictions).
Here’s the story, with video of the incident. Note the strange absence of the man going for his waistband.
I wonder how much the taxpayers of LA have paid in settlements over the past decade.
